The Forties wasn’t really on the top of my list of Fall 11 trends to talk about until Miu Miu became the second major sighting of the theme since Marc Jacobs. Ladylike is a key word here, and Miu Miu’s vision included strong shoulders, blouses and hip accents (such as overskirts or bows placed upon pencil skirts and dresses). You may be thinking that it all sounds a bit mature for Miu Miu – and it was, perhaps even more so than Prada’s swinging 60s collection. However, elastic hems and waistbands kept things a bit more youthful and sporty.
And now for a look back at Marc Jacobs’ interpretation of the trend.
One thing we must keep in mind is that Marc Jabobs is shown in New York – 4 weeks ahead of Miu Miu’s show in Paris. At the time, Marc Jacobs was the ONLY sighting of 40s reference on the runways, although it provided enough direction to make it into my Fall 11 New York Themes report on Fashion Snoops. Anyhow, looking back after Miu Miu, I’ve got to say that Marc has a thing going on. Sure, you dissect the pieces and there is gold – the pencil skirt, the rounded shapes. Put it all together and it works as perhaps the best 40s reference for Fall 11, with more polish and glamor – the skins, the fur, the hourglass silhouettes.
