Macy’s Latest Impulse: Matthew Williamson

Today Macy’s launches its newest capsule collection with Matthew Williamson. After Kinder Aggugini in February, Williamson’s collection is second in Macy’s designer collaboration series on the retailer’s Impulse contemporary floor. The Matthew Williamson for Impulse collection consists of 30 pieces, with most items retailing around $69. The collection is sold online and in 225 doors.

I’m a fan of Matthew Williamson so I really wanted to buy into this collection. There are great prints, good color and some great items that are obviously derived from the mainline brand – such as those moto pants and parachute shorts – as well as a variety of boho silhouettes. It definitely makes sense and stays true to the designer’s aesthetic. BUT it feels like maybe there is a little something missing, like those ruffle tops and boho blouses are maybe too missy for the contemporary market? I could be wrong, and let it be known that my review comes entirely from online imagery at this point (I DO want to see this in person, and then hopefully purchase something). I find the Dree Hemingway ad campaign cute and I want to believe that it’s just those catalog-y images that are throwing me off. Is it me or does Gilt do a better job?! Come on Macy’s! With Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld set as the next capsule collection, I could only hope that the photography gets a dose of je ne sais quoi!
